Scram Jones is a loose cannon
-- by Christopher "Scav" Yuscavage

If you open up the closet of Scram Jones, don’t be surprised to find a cape, mask, and an outfit streaked by a lightning bolt – playing the role of hip-hop’s superhero might just be another in the long line of jobs awaiting the New York emcee/producer/DJ.

Though he may not exactly dress that part, Scram knows his role on his official debut mixtape, “Loose Cannons,” an eclectic mix of Scram’s production efforts, a batch of commercial and underground New York hip-hop acts, and even several doses of Scram’s facetious and witty 16-bar attack.

While he has been around the game for a minute now, dropping mixtapes in conjunction with fellow mixtape entrepreneur Vin tha Chin, “Loose Cannons” welcomes Scram Jones into his own and offers him the chance to showcase his ability as well as the skills of others in his trade.

Basically, it’s just a self-produced mixtape and an outlet to show off the variety of artists I been working with and the variety of beats I been making,” Scram explains. “I’m trying to cover the full spectrum, whether it be underground or mainstream, or production or rapping, or East Coast or West Coast. Just showing the variety of things I do and what I’m trying to bring to the table.”

And “Loose Cannons” does just that, featuring artists ranging from mainstreamers Noreaga and Jim Jones to newcomers like Saigon to lost acts such as Nature and Sauce Money. In between takes, Scram, along with his High Society cronies (every superhero needs back-up now and then!), takes his best shot at hitting the microphone with entertaining presentations of wit and cleverness backed by his usually solid production.

Despite the commercial success of two of his recent production efforts though, “Yeah Yeah Yeah,” off the recent Terror Squad album, and “Work Magic,” off of Lloyd Banks’ solo debut, do not check for Scram to devote all of his time to just one aspect of his work anytime soon.

“To be honest, I enjoy all three,” Scram ceremoniously replies when asked to choose between deejaying, producing, and emceeing. “And I know as wack as that sounds, like I should say one more than another, but I like different things about each one. And I go through phases, too. Like I might be hitting the beats hard for a couple weeks, but then suddenly want to wake up everyday and write. Or then I might watch a DJ battle and be like, hold up, I got to go freshen my skills on the turntables. So I enjoy all three and just go through different phases randomly.”

Scram Jones may not be a superhero in real life, but he sure does play one on record. DJ, producer, emcee? Scram Jones does all three well enough to be considered an up-and-coming version of hip-hop’s own superhero, willing to attack any job in the name of saving and furthering the music
