Triple Seis - Starting Over
-- by Bill "Low-Key" Heinzelman

Losing a loved one is never easy, just ask Triple Seis. The former Terror Squad member was hit hard when his mentor and best friend Christopher "Big Pun" Rios passed away five years ago. From that moment on Seis' life would never be the same. With Pun no longer at his side, Seis chose to reevaluate his life and make his own path. It wasn't easy but it was what Pun would have wanted him to do.

Triple Seis' new journey started with his departure from the Terror Squad. According to Seis, without Pun in the group, he no longer felt a sense of trust and loyalty from the group. "Once Pun passed away", states Seis, "I thought to myself, he was really the only one that had my back. So when it happened, I just sat down with Fat Joe and told him why I wanted out, and I why I was gonna leave the Terror Squad". Joe acknowledged his request and let Seis go only on one condition. Joe told me, "If you gonna leave, just don't use your Terror Squad affiliation to try and make it. If you leave you gotta do it on your own".

Leaving the Terror Squad was a bold decision, no doubt about it, especially considering he was leaving the group with hardly anything but his name. "When you leave, you know you got nothing, and you are starting from scratch. So all those years were wasted" states Seis. "But not completely wasted because you still have a name for yourself". With hardly anything but his affiliation with Big Pun, Triple Seis was officially back at square one. For many, that would be enough to quit, but not for Seis. As soon as Seis left the TS, he immediately looked to get a singles deal with Fat Beats. "As soon as I left I went to Fat Beats, I did a single through them" states Seis. However, the deal almost never came to fruition, as the Fat Beats owner wanted to get approval from Joey Crack himself before he distributed Seis' material. But thankfully, things worked out. "The Fat Beats owner, he was contacting Joe asking him what should he do with it (the single). And Fat Joe let the song come out, because he had the power to stop it. But he let it come out because of the way it paned out between us".

Fat Joe's decision not to blackball Seis is why the two still have a mutual respect for each other. While the same cannot be said for the relationship between Cuban Link and Joe, according to Seis that issue does not concern him. "The vibe I have with Joe is totally different. That's my brother (Cuban) and I love him to death, but his issue is his issue". Seis adamantly states that there is no beef between him and the Terror Squad, but the group knows what side he is on.

While Seis is not shy about discussing his prior relations with the Terror Squad, his new found focus is on his resurging career. Seis does not want to be remembered just for his Terror Squad affiliation, he wants to become a great emcee in his own right. The building block for such a start comes with his debut album "Only Time 'LL Tell". While the album is being distributed independently, Seis still believes he can build a solid foundation with this release. "I just want to open more doors, where I can have more control over a project" states an optimistic Seis. With upstart label Madd Records doing all they can to help promote the album, Seis is hoping the label can help push him in the right direction so a major label will come calling his way in the future. "With an independent you don’t have to sell that much, but if you do enough numbers there will probably be a major out there that recognizes and gives me that big budget that I feel I deserve". It is this big budget and major deal that keeps Seis striving for greatness every day. "Hopefully I will get a bigger deal and a bigger budget next time" states Seis, "Where I can have more features, like a Jadakiss and Ghostface. Or certain artists that I know personally that would do it on my second album. I just gotta get my budget right".

Even though Triple Seis has been through his share of difficulties, he still has the burning desire to make it in this Hip Hop industry. While Seis knows he took a big step back by leaving the Terror Squad, he also knows if anyone can overcome the odds, it is him. "I'm trying to do this big" states Seis, "This is not an industry where you can take a step back. And from where we came from, touring around the world for four years, starting all over is a major step back".

You have to respect what Triple Seis has done and stood up for over the years. In this Hip Hop industry, it is very easy to leech onto someone else and milk them for everything they have. Seis could have stayed with the Terror Squad and Fat Joe, but instead he wanted to prove to the world that he could do it on his own. Only time will tell if Seis ever achieves his goals, but one thing is certain, he will never stop believing in his dream. And as Seis perfectly states, "It is easy to quit, but don't give up, don't give up!"
