These are the transcripts of an interview with Birdapres. The interview was conducted by Neoteric, early 2001.
Vancity mainstay Birdapres was gracious enough to grant us an interview at a Governor Bolts show at the Purple Onion in Vancouver. This interview was totally freestyled and we apologize for the generic questions. So, shaddup, read, learn stuff.
MVRemix: What have you been working on?
Birdapres:
I've been working on a whole bunch of stuff with DJ Moves and Gordski(The Goods), that's pretty much it.
MVRemix: Who do you listen to?
Birdapres:
I listen to everything from Black Sabbath, to Anne Murray, to James Brown, to Outkast, to Dose One.
MVRemix: Well, I came into this without any prepared questions, so basically, let people know what you are about.
Birdapres:
I'm about being here, right now, right now doing what I do, my thing you know, putting it down and making music. I mostly rhyme, but I'm getting into production. Also, I've been collecting records for a while now, so I sort of keep that going. I like to write a lot as well.
MVRemix: So what inspires you?
Birdapres:
Everything, anything.
MVRemix: If you had to pick one person to work with that you haven't worked with so far, who would that be?
Birdapres:
Uhm, that's a really tough question. I think that it would have to be….I don't know. I didn't come prepared for that one. Like production wise, or emcee wise?
MVRemix: Either way….
Birdapres:
I'd probably want to work with someone like Marley Marl. Someone older, just so I could pick up things from them.
MVRemix: What inspires you musically?
Birdapres:
Mostly older records, mostly 85 to 88 stuff, like Divine Force, lots of crazy stuff.
MVRemix: What do you think about Canadian Hip Hop?
Birdapres:
It's great, I love it. I love Governor Bolts, he's amazing. I think Buck 65 is dope. Cryptik Souls. Moka Only is dope. Swollen Members too.
MVRemix: Whats up with Moke? Have you guys worked together in the past?
Birdapres:
Yeah, we did a little project 2 years ago. It never came out though, but it's good.
MVRemix: Where does the name Birdapres come from?
Birdapres:
Well, Bird was a high-school nickname, but there was this other guy named Bird, so I added the "apres" because I thought it was clever, and my last name is French, so I figured I might as well flip it French.
MVRemix: Who do you listen to that absolutely blows your mind?
Birdapres:
I think Tom Waits. He's probably the most clever musician that I can think of, both lyrically and musically.
MVRemix: What do you think of Fiona Apple?
Birdapres:
I love Fiona Apple.
MVRemix: Word! Do you ever think you will leave Vancouver?
Birdapres:
I can see myself traveling, but I don't think I'll be moving anyplace else anytime soon.
MVRemix: Any Last Words?
Birdapres:
I've got a new tape and a 12" coming out soon. And it'll be live, live, live with DJ Moves and Gordski from the Goods on Low Pressure/Four Ways To Rock.
