Since the hiatus of TUG artists like Omarion, Marques Houston and everyone else in the You Got Served film TUG founder Chris Stokes spotted a 23 year old California native to Jamila better known as Mila J. Her foundation is music in addition to a diverse cultural background of Black, Asian, and Indian it is no wonder she can not only sing but write and dance as well. With a similar lifestyle to that of the Jackson 5 without Joseph Jackson at the head, Mila J began rapping at the tender age of 4. She recalls Kodak moments of studio sessions of her and her 4 siblings would have in her father’s garage and basement which was a homemade studio. She was first recognized by being in a lot of videos including the Prince and an Immature video at 9 in which she stole Stokes’s eye and it’s been on ever since.
She co-wrote much of the TLC, and Brandy inspired album with the 17 year old beat-maker Corey Bold out of Tampa, Florida who has worked with the likes of Mike Jones yes Mike Jones and Yung Joc, and oh Diddy as well. She also has production from Rodney Jerkins a.k.a Dark Child doing production on the album which is entitled Split Personality. Mila J does not have a split personality per se but she says it’s a testament to the fact that she raps and sings on the album. To prove that she is not some made up singer because she looks the part, she received a free copy of the 1985 hip-hop classic “Krush Groove” because she used to go to her local movie shop and would re-order that movie so many times the store decided to give her, her own copy. With the versatility to sing, dance, and write she hopes to put the TUG camp back on the map. Look for her single Good Lookin Out featuring Marques Houston. The album contains appearances by Omarion, her 10 year friend Chris Brown who she met of course dancing on tour with his groups. The album will be in stores October 2006 and for more info on Mila J go to www.myspace.com/milaj
