The Ill List Vol. 1 is a DVD you are either going to love or hate. The concept is simple, 13 of North America's finest poets on one stage. Not to over simplify the film, but that's basically all you are getting. One camera and one remarkable poet at a time. As you can tell, if you are not into spoken word, this DVD will have you bored after ten minutes. However, if poetry is your thing, it gets no better than watching 13 amazing poets display their remarkable talent. The most memorable poet is Michael Guinn, who recites "Bastard". The piece delves into Michael's abusive relationship with his mother, and her attempts to abort him as a fetus. Michael proclaims his mother used to beat him since he looked so much like his father, who was nowhere to be seen. The poem is riveting and really captures the raw anger and love Michael has for his mother.
The Ill List Vol. 1 gives you spoken word in its purest form. However, the DVD lacks any extra footage, commentary, or artist interviews. If you are the type of person who loves spoken word and can be found at a coffee house, then the Ill List Vol. 1 DVD is for you. If not, prepare for a nice nap.
