Thursday nights at Shine (364 Water Street, Vancouver) seem to be getting better and better. Like an aging bottle of wine, the night is gaining character and taste. This Thursday night in particular was a '94 Merlot.
The night was headed by Low Bee (formerly Low Budget), who along with Diplo makes up the Philadelphia crew Hollertronix. Like wine, the music being played was an acquired taste. The mash-ups were stuntacular.
Anything and everything was mixed up, including Lily Allen, Wyclef Jean, T.I., Dizzy Rascal, Justin Timberlake, Paul Simon, Gwen Stefani, Three 6 Mafia, Pharcyde, Outkast and more. The most memorable mix was J-Kwon's "Tipsy" with Paul McCartney's "Wonderful Christmas Time," which helped to get the audience in the holiday spirit.
Like any club night, it started out slow, and before you know it, you couldn't move around without bumping into someone. The crowd was an interesting one, with all types of characters: the chic girl that wouldn't talk to anyone except the ballers, the hoods, the newbies, the hipsters, the all-girl clique, the lush, the hip-hop heads, the meatheads and the regulars.
Special guest DJs included My!Gay!Husband! and Rico Uno, who did an amazing job of starting the night off right with the proper jams and maintained them throughout the night, especially when Low Bee needed a break and some time to enjoy it himself.
The night started at 10 p.m. and ended at two in the morning. A good four hours of musical bliss was had by all and can be revisited on December 28th, when My!Gay!Husband! and Rico Uno open for New York City's Aaron Lacrate.
